The Shell that holds the Water
Swimming pools can be completely or partially in-ground, anchored to hillsides, or placed directly on the surface of the ground. The type you select, as well as the availability of materials in your area, will determine the construction methods for your pool.
The majority of permanent pools are fully in-ground structures. They are the most accessible from patio areas and the most adaptable to unified landscape schemes. But both above-ground and partially in-ground swimming pools can also be attractive and enjoyable.
The two most common types of swimming pools are air-sprayed concrete – known as gunite or shotcrete – and vinyl-lined. Swimming pools made of fiber-glass are increasing in popularity.
You’ll hear many conflicting claims about the merits of various types of swimming pool construction, but beautiful and satisfactory pools can be made with each. The main thing is to have a knowledgeable contractor.
Concrete Swimming Pools
Concrete is one of the most popular construction materials for swimming pools. Its workability, strength, permanence, and flexibility of design make it ideal for innovative and interesting in-ground and hillside swimming pools.
The material is reinforced with steel rods to withstand the pressures of soil and water. The amount and size of the steel depends on the geographical location and the structural requirements.
The four main types of concrete construction are gunite, poured, hand-packed, and masonry block. Cost and availability of equipment usually determine which of these is used.
Several interior finishes are available in concrete swimming pools. The surface may be plastered in colors ranging from white to black. Though white is still the most popular, dark colors are being used more and more because of their attractive appearance and a small solar heating benefit. Instead of plastering the concrete can be troweled smooth and painted in one of a variety of colors.
The most expensive finish is ceramic tile. Its appearance can be striking and it’s easy to clean. Most owners compromise on a band of tile along the water line both for its attractiveness and for the ease of removing minerals, oil, and other dirt from it.
Other Swimming pool constrution materials are;
Gunite, Poured Concrete, Hand-Packed Concrete, Masonry Blocks, Vinyl-lined Pools, Metal or Plastic Sidewall Pools, Fiberglass Pools, Fiberglass Shells and Hybrid Fiberglass, and Portable Pools. |
