Swimming Pool to the Users Needs
For frolickers.
Many swimming pool users splash and play in shallow water and do little, if any, swimming. For this purpose, figure a minimum depth of 80cm, increasing to 120 to 130cm. Any size and shape will do, even a converted wine tank.
Though you may have small children, don’t be tempted to include a wading pool. They would soon outgrow it and be enjoying themselves in the main part of the pool with the rest of the family. Build a separate wading pool that later can be converted into a garden pond. Or buy a small, inexpensive plastic wading pool.
For Lap Swimmers.
Serious swimmers need a pool that’s at least 125cm deep so they don’t touch bottom while swimming and so they can safely negotiate turns at each end. The pool should have parallel ends and be straight and long – the longer, the better.
If the pool will be a training center for competitive swimmers, make the length an even divisor of 23 meters – 8 or 12 meters, Then they can develop a style usable for competitive meets.
Width is not critical – some lap pools in side yards are just wide enough for one swimmer. Keep in mind, though, that such a highly specialized pool may not meet the needs of potential purchasers of your home if you decide to sell.
There is an alternative if you’re a serious swimmer with neither the space nor the desire for a long pool. You can exercise by swimming against a current generated by a separate pumping system.
For divers.
Small pools are dangerous for diving, as the risk of hitting one’s head on the bottom or the sides is great. According to the minimum standards suggested by the American National Spa and pool Institute, diving from a height of only 50cm above the water requires a swimming pool at least 8.5 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, and 2.4 meters deep at the deep end. |
