Swimming Pool Automatic Controls Accessories
Automatic support controls are chemical dispensers and automatic cleaners – reduce the time you spend to maintaining a swimming pool.
Automatic Controls
Automatic controls added to your swimming pool system can take over such chores as turning the support system on and off, backwashing the filter, and maintaining the chlorine level.
Automatic Timer
Basically a 24-hour electric clock with adjustable contacts, a time turns equipment on and off at preset times. You can use a timer to turn on the heater, the pump for the filtration system, and the pump for an automatic pool cleaner. You can also control the heater with a thermostat to maintain the swimming pool water at the desired temperature. Remember that whenever the heater is on, the pump must also be running; after the heater shuts off, keep the pump running long enough to clear all hot water from the pipes.
Backwashing the Filter
You can eliminate the chore of backwashing your sand filter by installing an electronic device that monitors the increasing pressure in the system due to dirt; when the pressure is high enough to warrant backwashing, the device activates the necessary valves to do the job.
Dispensing Chemicals
Dispensers for chemicals and disinfectants range from a simple floating type containing pellets or sticks to one that manufactures chlorine and dispenses it automatically. Ask your swimming pool builder, pool service company, or swimming pool supply store for information and advice. Even with an automatic dispenser, you'll need to test your swimming pool water regularly and add supplemental chemicals as needed.
Pool Cleaners
Automatic swimming pool cleaners work either by vacuuming the dirt off the pool bottom or by agitating the dirt so it's carried out through the main drain. The cleaner's pump may be separate from the filtration system or connect directly into the filtration system.
Vacuum System
Seemingly with a mind of its own, a vacuum cleaner wanders in a random pattern across the bottom of the pool and sucks up dirt. The dirt-laden water is then carried through a flexible hose into the pool filtration system.
Agitators
One type of agitating cleaners floats on the surface of the swimming pool and propels itself around. Trailing from it are two or more hoses that swirl around under the force of water being pumped out of their ends. Another kind of agitating cleaner also uses hoses with water jets, but the hoses are built into the sides of the pool and retract when not in use. A third type of cleaner returns the water from the filtration system through special jets built into the bottom of the swimming pool; the jets direct the water over the bottom of the pool and move dirt towards the main drain. |
