Space around the swimming pool
Since your swimming pool will become the focus for outdoor activities and entertainment, you’ll want to make sure your design provides enough space around the swimming pool for swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
Except in the case of a naturalistic pool, you will want a paved area or deck at least 1 meter wide on all sides of the pool. This deck allows swimmers convenient access to the pool, keeps mud and dirt out of the water, prevents the garden from becoming waterlogged, and permits the person cleaning the pool to work unhindered.
With naturalistic swimming pools, all other considerations are secondary to appearance. Some owners, though, may naturalize only part of the area around the pool, reserving the rest for casual enjoyment.
For complete comfort, sitters, loungers, and sunbathers need a minimum space of about 1 by 2 meters a pieces and a least 1-meter between one another. For a table and four chairs, you’ll want an area measuring at least 3 by 3 meters.
One rule of thumb states that the area for poolside activities should be at least equal to the area of the pool. For example, a 6 by 12 meters pool (243 square meters) with the minimum 1-meter-wide deck on three sides would have an activity area 3.7 meters wide along one of the long sides.
Divers, too, have their poolside requirements. Depending on its length, the diving board can extend as much as 3 meters onto the deck from the edge of the pool; the divers will need at least 1-meter more to walk around the end of the board. And if you’re considering a slide, you will need up to 5 meters of deck space depending on the size of the silde. |
