Even more than gunite, the development of vinyl-lined or vinyl pools has brought pool ownership within the budget of many people. The savings are greatest in central Thailand, where the materials of this pools are widely available.

Some manufacturers prefabricate from simple materials and short construction time – 3 to 4 days are possible.

Sometimes, vinyl-lined swimming pools are known as prepackaged pools because the builder only has to specify the size and shape desired. Within a few days, everything needed for a complete pool, including the support system and accessories, is delivered at one time.

The vinyl-lined pool is actually a large, flexible container supported on the sides by walls made of aluminum, steel, plastic, masonry block, or wood. The bottom of the liner is secured by a special coping that both gives a finished look to the edge of the pool and serves as a border for the deck.

Divers can have a vinyl pool with a deep part either at one end or extending about two-thirds length of the pool.

Some sidewall structures are self-supporting, ideal for above-ground and on-ground installations. If used for in-ground pools, the pool can be filled with water before the excavation is backfilled.

The liner's lifetime is determined to a great extent by its environment and care. It is affected both by ultraviolet light from the sun and by pool alkalinity.

Fading due to ultraviolet light is prevented in some liners by the inclusion of ultraviolet inhibitors in the the vinyl material. Some vinyls also have inhibitors that prevent staining by fungus's in the sand underneath the liner. Chemicals do not affect it unless, by chance, chlorinated tablets are allowed to rest directly on the vinyl; chlorine is a bleach and can discolor the material. Because of its surface, the vinyl cleans easily and does not offer a home for algae.

Liners come in a range of colors and patterns. Rectangles and simple curved shapes can be made at a somewhat higher cost. Prefabricated steps and spas made from acrylic or fiberglass are available for vinyl-lined swimming pools.
